Hair Transplant
Hair transplant is an intervention that helps people suffering from hair loss - alopecia - to recover the expressiveness of their features and to improve their esthetic look, as well as regain trust in themselves. Hair Transplant Surgery, is a type of surgical hair restoration technique that involves moving individual hair follicles from a donor site to areas which require growth.
There are two main hair restoration techniques which can be used, Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)
The first method (FUT) is when the hair is extracted from thicker area of hair usually the back of the head, and then transferred to the area of growth. This technique usually leaves a large scar at the back of the head where the surgery was perfromed but will usually be covered by the surrounding hair.
The next method (FUE) is different technique used and is minimally invasive as it extracts the hair from the follicle and then transfers the hair individually to area that requires growth. The donor areas are then stitched closed and will be covered by the surrounding hair. Once the treated area begins to heal, the stitches will be removed. This method will generally heal over a short period of time, leaving no noticeable scars.
Hair restoration comes in many different forms, and can be treated both surgically and non surgically. The type of treatment needed will depend on various underlying factors and needs of the patient
The amount of sessions needed is dependent on the area of transplantation and how much grafts the patient requires to achieve the desired result.
Hair Transplant Treatment Duration
The first stage of the hair transplant procedure will be a consultation between doctor and patient, to discuss the type of procedure and focus on defining the new hair line. During this process the doctor will be able to explain everything to the patient about what to expect and answer any questions the patient may have.
The next step is for the Doctor to carry out the Hair Transplant Surgery. The duration of the operation can vary depending on the area of transplantation and can usually last between 4-8 hours.
During the recovery period, the patient will be given antibiotics and pain medications as prescribed by the doctor and will be instructed when and how often to take them. It can take up to 12 months before the full effects of a hair transplant procedure are noticeable.
The success rate depends heavily on the recovery period and the patient’s ability to follow the surgeon’s guidelines. The success rate refers to hair growing naturally in the recipient area where the transplant was performed and patients can usually experience a success rate of up to 95% after 1 year.
